Space constraints really force you to get creative when you’re designing and hotels are one of the best examples of this.

I always love seeing the creativity that designers use to add comfort and function to the 4-wall, basic layout of a hotel room.

There are a lot of cool touches in this hotel room at The Thompson Dallas that could be incorporated into your home too!

✔️ Create a built in fabric or leather headboard that spans the length of your bedroom wall. Bonus points for incorporating reading lights like they did here!

✔️ Create a cool 3-D layered art effect by using wood blocks to lift one frame off the wall on top of another.

✔️ Tuck a floating countertop between awkward bump outs in a wall and finish it off with a cube and mirror to make a compact vanity counter.

✔️ Use the space in front of large windows by creating a floating bar with shelves mounted in front of the window.

Light and views still shine through, but you get added storage space and a fun design element!

My friend Kelly sent me a DM with a game-changing tip for cleaning up your iPhotos:

〰️ Every day, type the current date into the search bar of your photos app and clean up that day’s photos.

I’ve been doing this and have deleted tons of old work photos, screenshots, duplicates, and just generally bad quality images. It is quick and feels really satisfying to be making headway.

As an unexpected benefit, I’ve been enjoying looking back at old images and reliving happy memories like my trip to Key Weat last year to celebrate my Mom’s birthday.

I took all these photos of inspiring spaces (The Hemingway House 😍) and they’ve just been sitting on my phone!

After a solid 3 years of yearning for the leather camp stools from a certain beachy furniture retailer, I have come to terms with the fact that I will never be ok with paying $600 apiece for a small folding stool.

One of my favorite parts of traveling to new places is soaking up all the beautiful details of the spaces I encounter.

We dropped into @mama_lolitas_mexican in Broomfield yesterday and enjoyed a great lunch… with a side of design inspiration.

I love how they added the circular lighting elements and I ESPECIALLY love how they incorporated this arch detail into the wall behind the bar.

It’s almost enough to make me think about incorporating this look into our basement somehow…. I think I’ll file it away into “future project ideas”.

I had to use a DJ Khaled song for this reel, duh (ANOTHER ONE!)

Seriously though, just like I said… sprucing up the area under my bathroom sink made me want to clean out under my kitchen sink.

Repurposed most of what I already had, only had to buy a low drawer (check out how functional the space under the riser is now!!!) and one tall stacking unit (because my dishrags were falling all over the place and driving me crazy).

This project took me 20 min start to finish, including cleanup. And now every time I open this cabinet, life’s a little bit better.

When people say they don’t know where to start getting organized my advice is always the same.

“Start with one small space.”

This area under the bathroom sink took less than 15 minutes (and no, I’m not exaggerating). And it feels SO much better when I open it.

Look how much more easy everything is to access now! The bright room stackable cabinet shelves and bin clips from Target are 🔥🔥🔥 because they magically help you use the vertical space under your sinks or in cabinets.

A few weeks ago, a friend reached out to me with a design dilemma- how do you decorate a big blank stairway wall?

I offered a few suggestions: paneling, wallpaper, a combination of both… but after wrestling with my own fair share of big, blank walls over the years… I can say with certainty that a curated gallery wall is by far my favorite solution to this particular design problem.

I like a mix of mirrors, vintage art, family photos, and 3-d objects such as baskets or pennants.

This is my current random gallery wall featuring random leftover mirrors I had lying around and thrift-store art I’ve collected over the years (all purchased for under 40 bucks).

I blinked and suddenly I turned 40 (back in October).

As part of this, I had to face the fact that my vision was catching up with my age, and I got glasses about a week ago.

(Can I just say, “Yay for the cute frames at Warby Parker?” At least I love them!)

But my vision woes aren’t the only thing I’ve had to admit to myself.

I was talking to someone last week and they mentioned that they thought I could draw. I quickly corrected them- “No, I can’t REALLY draw, I can just doodle.”

Last night I was thinking about this conversation (while I was doodling) and wondering why I do things like that? Why am I so quick to self-deprecate and dismiss my abilities?

No, I can’t draw realistic portraits. But I can sketch room layouts and create illustrations like this one (I’ve had the same illustration style since so was a kid).

Almost immediately after pondering this habit, I saw this quote and I felt like it was speaking to me.

Except in this case, it was reminding me to see the beauty in who I AM and what I can do.

I hope you see some beauty in an unexpected place today. Maybe in yourself?

If it’s January, I’m dreaming of spring! And the newest @jossandmain catalog inspired me so much with all their on trend Spring decor!

The trends they focused on included:

One of my favorite Sunday night habits (when I have time) is to set up my planner spread for the upcoming week.

I fill in everything written on my monthly calendar, transfer over unfinished tasks from the previous week, list any work or personal tasks I know need attention, and write out my grocery list.

I also try to prebook my workouts at this time and fill those in as well.

My planning supplies change, but right now I’m using an Erin Condren Vertical Life Planner and sticker sheets, washi tape, and some American Crafts sticker books I found on sale at Tuesday Morning awhile back.

Not every week gets stickers, but I really love the creative outlet of creating layouts and mixing colors and patterns.

I also check in on my goals section and see if anything needs more attention.

When looking for design inspiration, don’t forget to look at your life. Representing the people, places, and objects that hold meaning for you is the difference between decorating a house and creating a HOME.

A home that incorporates personal photos, sentimental art, and hand-me-down furniture is one that will instantly welcome you home at the end of a long day.

You don’t have to sacrifice style to achieve this look either… by selecting and displaying meaningful objects with intention, you can find balance in your interior design.

I have forever had an affection for vintage objects, and always encourage my clients to “shop” what they already have. I always say yes to hand me down art and special objects from people I love (even if I’m not sure where to put them). And I love to wander the thrift store to see what speaks to me.

These @slightlychoppy flags are a growing collection, but whenever one pops up in their store that aligns with a special place, I try to snap it up. No one else might notice them or question why they’re there… but each one holds a memory for me. And I smile each time I walk by them.

Trying to find your “thing” can be hard. I know I’m in the ballpark with the things I’ve been exploring and learning and trying (and failing at ) over the past few years.
