Sometimes a project works out better than you ever could have expected- and that is the case with this “Black Party Barn” project.

We wanted to add a fun, functional space on to our home that could provide indoor play space for our very active kids AND double as a hosting space for friend hangouts and all the sports team dinners we host.

In a little over a year, this addition has added SO much to both our home and our social lives!

I’m so excited to share the details of this personal project.

Party Barn Basic Details:

  • Basic Size – 62′ x 30′ structure
  • Ceiling Height- 20′ in gym, 10′ in lounge
  • 4 Built-In Storage Closets (1 on exterior)
  • Lounge Features: Kitchenette, Full Bath
  • 16′ x 8′ Sliding Door Wall In Lounge

When working on the design for the party barn addition, we wanted to create a stand alone entertaining space that still felt connected to our existing home.

The barn has multiple access points, including stairs that connect to a master bedroom patio, and walkways that wind down from our fenced back yard.

South Side

The exterior is clad in basic lap siding (we originally planned on board and batten, but this was a $$$ saver that really didn’t affect the look of the exterior much in the end).

We opted for large, fixed black Anderson 100 windows up top that let in a TON of natural daylight, and we created a parking area with recycled asphalt.

As our kids get older and have more friends who can drive, we expect that this parking area will hold a lot of cars…

East Side

The east side of the barn originally had two glass garage doors, but we reduced it to a single, larger door during construction.

Again, we were happy with both the savings and end result!

This door makes it SO light and bright on the court and provides a great breeze when opened in moderate weather.

West Side

The West side of the party barn sits below the grade of our backyard and the upper deck overlooks the mountains.

The sliding doors open to a poured concrete patio where we can set up a dining area or cocktail tables depending on what kind of event we’re hosting.

Most of the time, I just leave it set up with my go-to indestructible modern Adirondack chairs and a portable fire pit. The kids and their friends like sitting around the fire on the weekends.

Here, you can see how the structure relates to our home.

When hosting a larger event, we can open the gates and use the WHOLE yard for outdoor entertaining space – patio, garden, and party barn!

Second Story Deck

Finally, here is the space people are most curious about.

We turned the second story deck into a hydrotherapy/wellness area overlooking the Rocky Mountains.

We opted for a small, round hot tub and a cedar barrel sauna from Almost Heaven Saunas.

A small, easy-to-store folding table and chairs provide seating that can be easily stored during the winter months.

Thanks for checking out the exterior of our party barn project!

If you want to take a peek inside, come back soon. I’ll be sharing the teen lounge tour and photos of the indoor garage basketball court!

xoxo,
