What To Take to the lake (Whether You’re Living at the lake or just visiting)
What to take to the lake
I’ve been living at the lake for most of my adult life, and after countless Sundays on the water (and Saturday nights playing hostess!) I have dialed in my must haves for what to take to the lake.
These are the things I’m packing up and bringing down from the house on repeat. Whether you’re living on the lake and looking to update your summer staples or planning a trip and wondering what to take to the lake, I’ve got you covered in this post!

Lake Toys
We held off on purchasing a lilypad for a long time, but we finally got one and I am constantly amazed at how kids are drawn to them. If you are going to invest in ONE lake toy, I would suggest choosing one of these. We bought this one last year after our first one blew away in a summer storm. I’m super happy with it!
These are a lot easier to pack up and put away than the huge plastic raft/islands you see at Sam’s and Costco. They don’t get holes and they can easily be tied up using the included strap or a pair of bungee cords.

Some other great lake toys to consider include;
- Floating Hammock
- Ramp Shot (our crowd’s favorite)
- Can Jam, Bucket Golf or Giant Beer Pong
- Rafts
- Triple seater tubes for pulling behind the boat (this style is the kids’ favorite around here)
SOmewhere to Sit
If you’re living at the lake, you probably have some permanent outdoor furniture (if not, I recommend this stuff!). But if you’re traveling you’ll want something easy to fold, lightweight and fun.
My teen told me about the viral Target tanning chair, but alas… it’s already sold out. Luckily this (simpler) version is still available and a great option for the sun lovers in your crew.
I also really love these fun folding beach chairs. They recline and have cupholders… what else could you want?
Food + Drink Supplies
This is where I’ve really lived and learned, and the items I’m linking are truly the best I’ve found when it comes to keeping things cool and making sure everyone has a great time.
Here are some nice-to-have luxuries that really make a big difference:
- Insulated ice bucket (to keep drinking ice separate from cooler ice)
- Lidded wine tumblers (so you’re not splashing red wine on the boat when you hit a wave; ask me how I know…)
- Food covers to keep bugs off your snacks
- Snackle Boxes for snacks/cocktail garnishes/toppings
- Disposable aluminum cups (keep drinks cool longer than red Solo cups)
- Bowls with spill-proof lids for fruit, salads and snack mixes
- Covered charcuterie board
- An insulated pitcher for a batch of premixed boat drinks
- An outdoor silverware caddy to pack quickly

A Cute (Yet Practical) Outfit
Here’s my lake uniform:
- Cute suit
- Breezy coverup or jean shorts over my suit
- Birkenstocks (rubber or original)
- Snapback hat
I’m not a fashion blogger by any means, this is just what works best for me. Here are some of my faves 🙂
Music
If you’re living at the lake, you might have access to electricity. If so, I highly recommend this large party speaker. It has a stand so it pushes the sound out really well…it gets LOUD.
If you’re looking for something on-the-go, you can’t beat these small portable speakers. Easy to throw in your beach or pool bag, and they have great sound.
Portable Charger
I feel like I’m recommending these on every post I make lately, but they’re that good. It’s never fun when you’ve been streaming music all day and realize your phone is dead when you need to make a call.
If you bring a fully charged portable charging bank, you’ll never be without battery life.
